Julia Ann Lupresto (Kempf)

Julia A. Lupresto Kempf

NOTRE DAME - Julia A. Kempf passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016, while residing at the Quinn Memory Unit at Holy Cross Village in Notre Dame, IN.

She was born in South Bend, Indiana on September 7, 1924 to Pasquale and Josephine (Iemma) Lupresto who preceded her in death. She received the Sacrament of Baptism in St. Joseph Church, South Bend on January 18, 1925.

She attended school at St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Central High School in 1942.

She met Kenneth R. Kempf of Blue Island, Illinois in 1945 when, after completing his military service, he came to the University of Notre Dame to earn his engineering degree. They were married in St. Joseph Church on April 30, 1949. Kenneth preceded her on March 18, 1979.

She is survived by her son, Paul A. (Martha) Kempf of South Bend; and her grandchildren, Andrew, Allyson and Adam Kempf all of South Bend who referred to her as “Bea” as little children. Even today she affectionately is known as “Bea”. She is also survived by a sister, Rose M. (Lupresto) Brzezinski and a brother, Joseph P. Lupresto. Two brothers, Rocco J. Lupresto (2011) and James T. Lupresto (2001) also preceded her.

Julie was a dedicated wife and mother, and was active in volunteer work at St. Joseph Hospital, South Bend, Christ Child Society, Ladies of Notre Dame, Senior Life, Funeral Ministry and Bethany Society of Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame. She was always very proud of the quilts the Bethany ladies sewed for the Notre Dame Barn Sales.

She had a great passion for gardening, and as one of her neighbors has said, “When Julie stepped off her back porch, the blades of grass stood up and saluted her”. This, because of the loving care she showered on her lawn. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking and especially baking, including perfecting a once lost German family recipe for holiday anise cookies. The tradition was to bake these cookies the day after Thanksgiving, allowing them to mellow. They were then distributed to family and friends at Christmas. This is a family affair that has and will continue in her memory.

We would like to thank the staff at Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame for the wonderful care she received.
