March 9, 1923 - July 23, 2005

Edwin E. Heyse, 82, of East Donmoyer Street, passed away after an illness at 2 P.M. Saturday, July 23, 2005, in Elkhart General Hospital. He was born on March 9, 1923, in South Bend, IN, to George and Martha (Kraft) Heyse, who have preceded him in death along with a brother, Ernest Heyse, who passed away in 2003.

He retired from A.M. General after 11 years of service, where he was a machinist. Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Tompos of Bettendorf, Iowa; two brothers, Eugene and George Heyse, both of Mishawaka, Ind.; and one stepbrother, Casimir Wroblewski of Montgomery, III.; his best friend since first grade, Ray Cukrowicz; and nine nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call from 10 A.M. until time of services at 11 A.M. Thursday, July 28, 2005, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Ave., South Bend, Ind. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Military services will be conducted by American Legion Post 357. He was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church, a veteran of World War II, DAV White Eagle Chapter 39, VFW Post 8748, and American Legion Post 357. While serving in the Army he received a Bronze Star for bravery, the Purple Heart, and an oak leaf cluster. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church

Pinning her faith On the belief an error has been mad a South Bend mother, Mrs. Martha E. Heyse  Is disregarding a war department telegram received Dec. 31. stating that her son. Private  Edwin E. Heyse was missing In action in Italy on Dec. 9. Mrs. Hey is convined. she said, that the telegram is in error for she has a US mail letter from Edwin dated Dec. 13. stating he had been wounded Dec. by shrapnel and that he had been evacuated immediately to a base hospital in North Africa where he was writing the letter. Technical Sergeant Ernest W. Heyse. of Camp Lee; Va.. brother of Edwin. notified his mother that she should not worry far he also had received a letter from Edwin stating he had been injured Dec. 7 and that he was recovering. Edwin Heyse graduated from Central High school with the class of 1942 and worked as a time study clerk at Bendix Aviation Corporation until his induction in February 1943. Completing his infantry training at Camp Croft! i. C.. last July he was shipped to North Africa and then Italy.
