EX-SOUTH BEND RESIDENT DIES IN CRASH Car-Truck Accident Kills Wife of Diplomat
Rebecca Romine, 41, formerly of South Bend, died in a Charles Town, W.Va., hospital Thursday of injuries she received yesterday afternoon in a truck-car accident on U.S. 340 near Harpers Ferry, W. Va. She and her husband, a career diplomat and their three children, resided at 6620 Barr Rd., Washington, D.C.
She is the former Rebecca Banghart. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Banghart, live at 1034 E. Cedar St.
According to West Virginia State Police, Mrs. Romine had pulled out of a secondary road in her small foreign car onto U.S. 340 at a three-way intersection into the path of a westbound semi-tractor trailer rig driven.
A passenger in her auto, a nephew, Charles Leslie, of Granger, Utah, was injured and remains in Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington. Mrs. Romine was taken to Charles Town Community Hospital, where she died later in the day. The trucker was not injured, according to state police.
The mishap occurred at about noon Thursday. The Romines had returned to the United States just a year ago after eight years in Europe, the last six of which were spent in Paris where Mr. Romine was attached to the American embassy in Paris. He presently is attending the Industrial College of the Armed Forces before being reassigned in the fall.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Romine is survived by a son, Woodward Romine Jr. and two daughters, Caroline and Rebecca, all at home; her parents; a sister, Mrs. Max Leslie of Granger, Utah; and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Harold O. Clayton, 812 W. LaSalle Ave., South Bend.
Funeral services and burial will be in South Bend. Arrangements are incomplete at the Welsheimer Funeral Home, but the funeral service is set tentatively for Tuesday at the First Methodist Church
