Phyllis Jean (Melton) McGriff

Mrs. Phyllis Jean McGriff, 54, of 618 E. Dayton St., was found dead in her home Wednesday night after a brief illness. She formerly was employed by Newman Altman, Inc.

She was born on Aug. 19, 1927, in South Bend and was a lifetime area resident. In 1948 in South Bend, she married Rolland P. McGriff, who died on Sept. 26, 1973.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Joy Gilliam of Alabama and Mrs. Jean Freel of South Bend; four grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Yankee of Mishawaka and Miss Elizabeth Melton of South Bend.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 1201 S. Michigan St., with Rev. David Smeltz, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in St. Jospeh Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1143.
