Mercedes M. Gassensmith, 83,passed away peacefully at Hospice House on Monday, November 29, 2010. She was the daughter of Cyril and Betty (White) Gassensmith.
She is survived by her brother, John Gassensmith of South Bend; a nephew, Robert Gassensmith of San Francisco, CA; and a niece , Nancy Gassensmith Kieft of South Bend, IN.
Also surviving are two great nieces, Kristen Hansen of Pompano Beach, FL; and Kimberly Petrina Potterton of Naperville, IL. She has 2 great-great nieces, Victoria and Grace Petrina of Naperville, IL; and several cousins.

Mercedes graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1945 where she was active in the drama club. After graduation she went to Chicago to further her acting career. She was a member of the Woodstock Acting Troop, which included now famous actors Tom Bosley, Geraldine Page and Tim Conners. She performed in several plays in Chicago. When the troop decided to relocate to New York City, Mercedes decided to return to South Bend.

She then attended Vogue Beauty College and after graduating, she began her career at Beauteria Beauty Shop in downtown South Bend. In 1957 she purchased the salon which grew into a successful business. In 1971 she relocated the salon to South Michigan Street above the Dainty Maid Bakery which offered additional client services and an updated atmosphere. Her salon was one of the first in the area that retailed unique designer gifts as well as jewelry and other merchandise.

In 1992 Mercedes retired. She had the opportunity to spend more time doing what she loved; baking, making homemade candy, going to the Blue Chip and reading.

She was a member of St. Anthony dePadua Catholic Church, where Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, December 3, 2010. Friends may visit from 9:30-10:30 AM Friday at the church prior to services. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mercedes may be made to ADEC, Bristol, IN.
