SOUTH BEND - Dorothy Rae Haney, 86, residing in South Bend, passed away at 4:30 pm Monday, April 22, 2013, in West Bend Nursing & Rehab Center. She was born in South Bend on July 4, 1926, to the late James and Anna (Lappe) Ewing, and remained a lifelong area resident.

On April 26, 1947, she married Lewis L. Haney, who preceded her in death on May 9, 1999. She was also preceded by a son, Greg Haney on March 28, 2003; as well as two brothers, Jim and William Ewing; and four sisters, Jane Kalal, Annie Heiden, Betty Klebosits and Doris Ewing.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Don) Galeziewski of South Bend; daughter-in-law, Mona Haney of Niles, MI; seven grandchildren, Anne (Ed) Swiatalski of North Liberty, Daniel (Christy) Galeziewski of South Bend, Jennifer (Michael) Smith of Indianapolis, IN, Michelle Galeziewski of South Bend, Troy (Marissa) Haney of Lansing, MI, Ryan (Amber) Haney of Boston, MA, and Lisa (Joe) Reichanadter of Niles, MI; and seven great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by sisters, Lorraine Kelly of San Diego, CA, Helen Lovette of Mishawaka and Geraldine Struever of Edwardsburg; and one brother, Robert (Joann) Ewing of Naples, FL.

After graduating from South Bend Central High School,

Dorothy was employed at Ball Band and Schafer Gear, before becoming a self-employed caregiver for many people. She enjoyed playing softball and running hurdles in track when she was younger. Dorothy was also a great bowler and a member of the 600 Club. She and her husband enjoyed many camping trips in their Air Stream RV. She was also a longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Dorothy's family would like to thank her home caregivers, Roxanne Shreve, Cheryl Hickey, Karen Mack and Rosa Hernandez, as well as the entire staff at West Bend Nursing & Rehab Center for the excellent care given to their mother during her final days.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday, April 27, 2013, in Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR 933, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 8:00 pm Friday, April 26, 2013, in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Dorothy may be donated to Alzheimer's & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, 922 E. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617.
