Lillian Christina Voss Newsom

Lillian V. Newsom, 88, residing in Mishawaka, IN passed away at 8:22 pm Thursday, May 12, 2011 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Lillian was born in South Bend on April 3, 1923 to the late Adolph Frederick and Hermine Lena (Haselbeck) Voss, and remained a lifelong resident of the area.

Lillian graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1941. During her high school years she participated in the marching band, was a member of the National Honor Society and the Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She also received a D.A.R. Citizenship Award. On February 20, 1942 in South Bend, Lillian married Robert L. Newsom. While her husband served in WWII she worked at Wilson Brothers. In later years she worked part time at the South Bend Tribune as a proofreader for 12 years until she retired to spend time with her grandchildren. Lillian was a dedicated homemaker who loved decorating her home, sewing, crafts, and gardening. She and her husband Bob loved to travel across the United States first with their children and later with their granddaughters. Her husband Robert preceded her in death on August 15, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Frederick A. Voss.

Surviving Lillian is one daughter, Charlotte (Dennis) Kinyon of Granger; one son, Laurens L. (Cynthia) Newsom of Altus, OK; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Anthony) Greenlee of Mishawaka and Catherine (Jeffrey) Schrock of Granger; and two great grandsons, Nicholas Greenlee of Mishawaka and Robert L. Schrock of Granger.

Graveside services for Lillian will be 2:00 pm Friday, July 1, 2011 at Bowman Cemetery, 1630 Miami Street, South Bend, IN 46614, with Rev. Greg Timmons of First Christian Church Mishawaka officiating. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, South Bend and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
