Victor William Steinhoffer Sr.

BENTON HARBOR Victor William Steinhoffer Sr., 88, of Benton Harbor and Eustis, Fla., and formerly of South Bend, Ind., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, after a brief illness. Victor was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Niles to the late John and Anna (Grabner) Steinhoffer.

He was a graduate of South Bend Central High School, served in the Navy during World War II as a Machinist Mate S 1st class in the Construction Battalion known as the Seabees. After returning from World War II he joined his brother, John, at Steinhoffer Scale Company. They worked many years together, and in 1964 he branched out and started Michiana Scale Company in Benton Harbor. His son later joined him in that business, and they worked together until his retirement. He was a 64-year member of the International Society of Weighing and Measurement.

He married the late Elsie Fisher, and together they raised two children, Victor Steinhoffer Jr. and Cynthia Wells. On Feb. 16, 1979, he married the former Grace Dean. Victor had four siblings who preceded him in death, John, Stephen and Agnes Steinhoffer and Helen Mead.

In addition to his siblings, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Steinhoffer; a son, Victor Steinhoffer Jr.; and a son-in-law, John Wells. He is survived by his wife, Grace; daughter. Cynthia Wells of Sylmar, Calif; daughter-in-law, Linda Steinhoffer of South Bend, Ind.; and son, Dale Dean Sr. (Mary Jane) of Berrien Center. Victor also has three grandchildren, Dale Dean, Jr., Cheri Dean and Kristina Beatty, five greatgrandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitors will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 18, at Allred Funeral Home, 212 S. Main Street, Berrien Springs. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the funeral home.
