Patricia Hickey (Sarb)

Patricia Margaret Hickey Sarb

Patricia Margaret Sarb of Dearborn, born in South Bend, Indiana, in 1924, died on August 22, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard F. Sarb; her brothers, Thomas, Louis, Donald, Gerald, John, and Joseph Hickey; her sister, Kathleen Hickey Arnt; her sons, Donald and John; and her granddaughters, Anna and Colleen. Pat is survived by her children, Gerard Jr. (Debra), Michael, Thomas (Ruth Ann), Patrick (Lynda), Kevin (Eileen), Kathryn (Walter) Elkins, Timothy (Mary), Mary Pat Marquardt, and Anne; daughters-in-law Lynda and Barbara; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Mary Hickey.

Pat’s dream of having a big family came true, and her love for Jerry and their eleven children was fierce and tender. She managed her household with skills worthy of a four-star general or a captain of industry, and at the same time was feisty and full of fun, possessed of what her father called “an infectious charm” that made it lovely to be in her presence. Pat’s devotion to family had its roots in her early years in South Bend, and happy memories of her parents, brothers, and sister were always with her. Her affection extended to nieces and nephews on both sides, who treasured words of love and comfort from Aunt Pat. Alongside family, faith was the touchstone of Pat’s life: her customary words of farewell were “God love you.” She belonged to Sacred Heart Parish for more than 60 years and was a member of the parish council, the school board, and the Rosary Society. Pat attended Saint Mary’s College in South Bend and treasured Hickey and Sarb ties to the University of Notre Dame (and vigorously rooted for its football team). The family cottage on Magician Lake was dear to her heart, and early risers often found her sitting alone in the big front room, taking silent delight in the sunrise. Pat faced personal struggles and tragedies with great courage. Those who loved her dearly were very proud of her as well, and will dearly miss her, always.

Visitation Friday, August 26, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hackett-Metcalf Funeral Home. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 22430 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan 48124.
