Dr Edward Cain Froning

Dr. Froning, a native of South Bend, Ind., lived in the county 10 years. He was educated at Notre Dame University, the University of Illinois, the University of Utah and the State University of Iowa. An orthopedic surgeon, he had been in private practice and with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group.

He received patents on spinal instruments and took part in a Food and Drug Administration study of chymopapain, a treatment for herniated disc. Last year, he was a member of an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons team training physicians for chymopapain. Dr. Froning was a member of the International Lumbar Spine Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Western Orthopaedic Association, the North American Lumbar Spine Association, the American Association of Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Surgeons, the San Diego County Medical Society, the North American Spine Society board and the Mormon Church's Del Mar Ward. He had served as a captain in the Army.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; two sons, Jeffrey of San Diego and Thomas of Rancho Santa Fe; two daughters, Cindy and Amy, both of Rancho Santa Fe; two brothers, J. Fendall of Pennsylvania and Henry of Michigan; a sister, Laura Parkinson of North Carolina; and a grandson. The family suggested donations to the American Heart Association.
