John Everett Smith, 78, of Estillfork, Ala., father of a local resident, died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Huntsville, Ala. He was born Jan. 31, 1922, in South Bend, and had been a cement finisher for Hartman Builders of South Bend for 33 years before moving to Arizona.

On Jan. 25, 1941, he married Martha Garwood, and she died in 1991.

Mr. Garwood was an Army veteran, serving in Germany during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mishawaka and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are a son, Jeffrey E. Smith (wife: Pat) of Dadeville, Ala.; four daughters, Janice Mesoloras (husband: Jerry) of Argostoli, Greece, Joyce Stemp (husband: Art) of Wheeling, Ill., Jean Emmans (husband: Del) of Estillfork, and Jennifer Tuttle (husband: Charles) of West Lafayette.

A memorial service will be held in Phoenix at a later date.
