Sheila M Herczeg

September 16, 1936 ~ March 28, 2022 (age 85)

Sheila M. Herczeg, 85, residing in South Bend, passed away at 6:18 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2022 at North Woods Village, Mishawaka.

She was born September 16, 1936 in South Bend, a daughter of the late Charles & Nora (Fitzgerald) Bedoe, and has remained a lifelong resident of South Bend, except for 10 years she lived in Muncie, IN.

On September 22, 1956 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in South Bend, Sheila was united in marriage to Stephen R. Herczeg.  Together they enjoyed 64 wonderful years of marriage until his passing on December 10, 2020.  She was also preceded in death by her son Stewart Herczeg, her grandson, Stevie Herczeg, her brother Paul Bedoe, and a cousin Mary Lou Fitzgerald Costello.

Mrs. Herczeg graduated from South Bend Central High School, and retired as a secretary at South Bend Form Tool company where she worked for 18 years.  She has been a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church in downtown South Bend.

Sheila volunteered actively in the community including dedicating time as a hospice volunteer, election poll worker for 25+ years, and served as a Eucharistic minister for the homebound.

Mrs. Herczeg is survived by her daughter Sara S. (Shawn) Curran of Fishers, IN; sons, Stephen J. Herczeg, retired Lt. Col. U. S. Army, Columbus, GA; and Scott J. (Sandy) Herczeg of Mishawka, IN, and her daughter-in-law, Tamela Herczeg of Columbus, GA.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Meghan Curran, Indianapolis, IN; Kaitlyn Herczeg, Mishawaka, IN; Jordan Herczeg, Pensacola, FL; Michael Herczeg, U.S. Army, Niceville, FL; Austin Herczeg, Blaine, MN; Katie Herczeg, Corvallis, MT; Christopher (Vicki) Brennan, Jacksonville, FL; and Johnny Hoof, Baytown, TX; along with six great-grandchildren.

Combined Mass of Christian Burial for Steve and Sheila Herczeg will be celebrated at 11:00a.m. Monday, April 11th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, South Bend, where the family will receive guests one hour prior to mass.

Graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery where military honors will be offered for Steve’s faithful service to our country.  Online condolences to the family may be sent to www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.  The Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel is assisting the Herczeg family with arrangements.
