In Memory

Gregory Bogunia - Class Of 1970

Gregory Bogunia

Gregory Bogunia

November 27, 1950 ~ September 9, 2024 (age 73)

Greg Bogunia left us on September 9, 2024. Greg was a cherished man, known for his kind loving, caring and humorous personality.

Greg was born on November 27, 1950, to Anthony and Leona Bogunia.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy.  In addition, he leaves behind his sister, Becky; his four children; and six grandchildren. He would often joke that he had over 600 cousins, many of whom he was very close to, but none more so than his cousin, Tommy Bogunia, who was like a brother to him. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Christopher. Greg had such an impact on his family and so many others. It leaves an unfillable void in the lives of so many.

Greg attended the former South Bend Central High School, where he was star quarterback. He graduated in 1970, the final graduating class at Central. After high school, Greg served in the United States Army in the Artillery Division in Vietnam. When he returned from the war, he worked in various positions, before he began work for the Indiana State Highway Department for thirty years, until his retirement.

Greg lived a life filled with passion in his love of sports, including fishing, hunting, golf and pickleball.  A memory he cherished most was his fishing trip to Canada with his son, Justin, and grandson, Bryant, this past June. It was the trip of a lifetime for him. Greg’s passion for sports brought him to many as a mentor and coach. He touched the lives of numerous people and was adored by so many of his friend’s children, who often would remark on his kindness and humor and the impact he had on their children’s lives. Greg was an avid football fan and loved the Chicago Bears and Notre Dame. Greg and his wife, Kathy, spent their winters in Fort Myers, Florida, playing pickleball with friends and their summers in Elkhart, Indiana, on the St. Joseph River, fishing, boating and gardening and enjoying their friends and family.

We will welcome our friends and family to his celebration of life on Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 3:00-6:00pm at the American Legion Post 357, 5414 W. Sample Street, South Bend, IN. There will be a brief ceremony at 4:30pm, where memories will be shared about Greg. Elkhart Cremation Services has been entrusted with his care.
