Pastor - Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ Superintendent Carl J. Steen Sr., D.D., 73, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2005, from Memorial Hospital. An anointed man of God, his life was full of love for his family and friends, humor and a passion for the service of the Lord as a minister of the gospel.
He positively influenced many people's lives. He was born May 1st, 1932, in South Bend, Indiana, as the son of the late Lawrence and Lolemmer Steen. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Dudley Black and Donald Steen; sisters, Ruby and Mary Esther Steen; and by a son, Eric Bryan. Supt. Steen was raised and lived in South Bend all of his life, with the exception of the time he spent in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
He was stationed in Roswell, New Mexico, when he met Genevieve Hudson of Milwaukee, Wis., who he married in 1955. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Genevieve; two daughters, Denise of South Bend and Debra (Al) Tatum of Indianapolis; and a son, Carl J. Jr. (Jacqueline) of South Bend. Also surviving are a sister, Ann Black of Des Moines, Iowa; a very close niece, Lylene Cannon of South Bend; and his grandchildren, Cara, Carl III, Chloe, Tevin, Trenton and Talisha.
He will also be missed by a host of relatives, his church family and friends. Supt. Steen graduated from Central High School in 1950. He enhanced his education at Indiana University South Bend. In 1976 he received his Doctor of Divinity degree from the Universal Bible Institute.
In 1993 he received a Doctor of Theology degree from Charles Harrison Mason Bible College and School of Theology. He also taught classes at the South Bend campus. Supt. Steen worked for 30 years at the Bendix Corporation, now known as Honeywell International, as an operator in brake department 5B. He retired in 1981 and was a member of the United Auto Workers Union.
He served in the United States Air Force as an airborne radio operator from 1952 - 1956, and spent time as an inactive reserve from 1956 to 1960. Certainly his lifelong mission was to answer the call Jesus Christ placed upon his life. He was the pastor of Saints Memorial Church of God for 32 years. He accepted Christ at the age of 12, and was called in the ministry of the gospel at the age of 24. He worked diligently at motivating, inspiring and urging people to commit their lives to Christ.
