SOUTH BENDJoan Smith, 77, made her transition on Aug. 4th in Regency Place of South Bend.

Joan was born on Oct. 17, 1930, in South Bend, to the union of Leonard and Josephine Smith, who preceded her in death. She graduated from South Bend Central High School and relocated to Detroit, MI, with her son, Ronald, in 1965.

She took a correspondence course for dental assistants from the Bosworth Dental School, located in Chicago, IL, and received her degree as a dental assistant in 1990. She attended Wayne State University and received certification in socio-demograpics and health. She received additional education at the Cleveland Clinic in Dentistry and became the first black president of the Wolverine Dental Association Society.

She became a member of Detroit Unity Temple in 1978 where she served as wedding coordinator and as vice president of the board of directors from 1984 to 1986. She became a Yoga student, teacher and a believer in the Trith Principles, and had practiced this belief for 24 years.

She relocated to South Bend in 2004 and became a member of Unity Church of Peace, serving on the Committee for World Prayer Day, as an usher, and served on the Prayer Team. She worked for the last three years as a receptionist for radio station WUBS.

She salutes her precious son, Ronald, who preceded her in death on March 11, 2007, and her brother, William R. Smith.

She loved and salutes her sister, Marlene (MiMI) Wright of South Bend; brothers, Leonard Smith of Granger and Reverend Dr. Paul Smith of Maryland; a play son, Fred Watson of Wayne, MI; a play niece, Janet Craft of Oak Park, MI; prayer partner, Marjorie Hughes of Gross Park, MI; a dear friend, Carl; and sisters-in-law, Kathleen and Francis. She also salutes her many nieces and nephews, including the great- and great-great, loving relatives and her many friends.

She departs in body only. Her spirit remains with many. So smile and laugh and rejoice in this day and all the days of your lives that the Lord gives you and be glad.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held in Joan's honor on Friday, August 15, at 11 a.m. in Unity Church of Peace, 905 Colfax Avenue, South Bend.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her name to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 5005 L.B.J. Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.

The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
