Norbert John "Skip" Gassensmith, 82, lifelong resident of South Bend, died peacefully at Signature Healthcare Sunday, October 5 at 7:15 pm.

Skip, as everyone knew him, was born in South Bend, IN, on January 6, 1932, to the late Norbert William and Edna Mae (McCarthy) Gassensmith. He graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1950 and The University of Notre Dame in 1954.

Norbert was the Vice President TV Program Manager at WSBT-TV until his retirement in 1992 after 38 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ann (Turk) Gassensmith in 1987. On June 22, 1991 he married Mary Claire Clauss at a lovely ceremony in South Bend. Norbert was affiliated with many organizations including the Board of Directors for the South Bend Mishawaka Area Chamber of Commerce; Program Executives of the National Association of Television; President, Vice President, Secretary, Board of Directors of the Salvation Army; President, Vice President, Board of Directors of the South Bend Press Club; President, Vice President, Board of Directors and recipient of two Paul Harris Fellowships for the South Bend Rotary Club; and the Board of Directors for United Way.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Norbert was also preceded by his brother, E. Patrick (Judy) Gassensmith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Claire Gassensmith of South Bend; her two loving daughters, Mary Catherine (Michael) Quebedeau of South Bend and Laura (Lance) Trexler of Zionsville; three adoring sons, Jon M. (Stacey) Clauss of Sherrard IL, Mark J. (Barbara) Clauss of Terre Haute and Patrick J. (Kristin) Clauss of Granger; loving grandchildren, Frank, Nick, Luke, Seagin, Arden, Rokia, Andrea, Sam, Adam, Aaron, Julia and Riley; also left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Marijo Wilhelm of South Bend and Cecila (Jerry) Florkowski of South Bend; his foster son, David (Ginny) Kelleher of Westfield, and many loving nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held Saturday Oct. 18th from 1:00 until 3:00 pm, at McGann Hay Funerals / Cremations / Gatherings, University Chapel, 2313 E Edison Rd. At Ironwood, 232-1411. Private burial will take place later. Memorial donations in Skip's memory may be directed to Center for Hospice Care, Riley Children's Hospital, or Rotary International at downtown South Bend.
