SOUTH BEND, IN - Harriet J. Flowers, 89, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 in her home.

She was born on April 22, 1929 to the late Robert and Stella (Michalski) Leffel in Detroit, MI, and was a lifelong South Bend resident. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Chelminiak; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” Urban.

Harriet retired on May 31, 1995 from the University of Notre Dame Faculty Senate, where she worked as a secretary from 1968 until 1995. She was a graduate of Central High School in South Bend.

On June 16, 1951, as Harriet J. Leffel, she married Richard R. Flowers on June 16, 1951 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. He preceded her in death on May 7, 2010.

Harriet is survived by her five children, Steven (Gail) Flowers of South Bend, IN, Janet (Michael) Pfeil of South Bend, IN, Gail (Rocky) Pope of Katy, TX, Richard “Rick” (Christine) Flowers of South Bend, IN, and Dean Flowers of Indianapolis, IN; eight grandchildren, Amber (Adam) Donevant, Craig Flowers, Anthony (Rachel) Chelminiak, Andrew (Allison) Chelminiak, Christopher Chelminiak, Samantha Pfeil, Cori (Jody) Powers, and Brook Pope; three great-grandchildren, Ella Chelminiak, Evan Chelminiak, and Peyton Powers; and one sister-in-law, Patricia Flowers of South Bend, IN.

Harriet was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and a former member of the Elbel 9 Holers Golf League. She was a Northwestern University, Notre Dame, Chicago Cubs, and Indianpolis Colts fan.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with Rev. Daryl Rybicki officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
