SOUTH BEND - John C. Phelps, Sr., 71, of North Olive Street, South Bend, IN., passed away October 14, 2017 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN.

John was born June 4, 1946 in South Bend, IN., to James C. Phelps and Mildred L. (Pryor) Bennett. He graduated from South Bend Central High School. He worked as a laborer for the Railroad Company and retired from AM General. In 1969 he married Betty C. Sheppard in South Bend, IN. His hobbies included cooking, bowling and working on cars.

John was preceded in death by his father James C. Phelps and a sister, Minnie Eiland.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife, Betty C. Phelps of South Bend, IN., three daughters, Crystal (Sergio) Nichols and Jontue'(Terrance) Dozier both of Huntsville, AL., Towanda R. Lax of Fredericksburg, VA., three sons, John C. (Jennifer) Phelps, Jr., of Niles, MI., David Searcy, Sr., and Hardy O. (Tyral) Searcy both of Kansas City, MO., 15 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, three sisters, Gladys Cleveland of Cleveland, OH., Raemozelle Phelps of South Bend, IN., and Ida Hennington of Slidell, LA., one brother, James Phelps, Jr., of South Bend, IN., along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with viewing from 9:00 a.m., to 10:00 a.m., at the church.
