Mary Lou (Scott) Myers

August 9, 1941     ~     February 8, 2025

Mary Lou Myers, 83, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 12:34 p.m. on February 8, 2025. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Mary Lou was born in South Bend, Indiana on August 9, 1941 to James and Neva Scott. She was the youngest of three children.

In 1959, she graduated from Central High School. Following graduation, she started a career in banking and securities which she took great pride in. Eventually she became a successful entrepreneur.

In the spring of 1963, she met Kenneth Myers of South Bend, Indiana and in a whirlwind romance, they wed on June 14, 1963. Before his passing in 2019, they celebrated 56 years of marriage. Mary Lou and Kenny started their life together by traveling Route 66 to San Francisco, California, settling in both Haight-Ashbury and Burlingame. She often reminisced about the fun times they had listening to live music, traveling by trolley cars, and day trips to the RedWoods. They eventually returned home to raise their family in Niles, Michigan.

One of her accomplishments that she was most known for was the “Potato Baby”. In 1983, with the encouragement of her husband, she copyrighted a doll of her design and launched her business, Crafts by Lou. Until her retirement, she hand-sewed countless Potato Babies which have been sold and collected far and wide.

Mary Lou loved traveling with her family and often made sure that the itinerary included time to visit her dearest friends. She enjoyed reading Nicholas Sparks and Fannie Flagg, watching old movies and decorating for the holidays. She was the family historian sharing stories from her life with the amazing ability to recall every last detail down to the weather. Her recent pastime included conversation on history and world events with her grandson-in-law until early hours of the morning. Her favorite, above all else, was the love and enjoyment of her two granddaughters, Alex and Kristin. She was not only grandma to them, but to all of their friends.

Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Christine (William) Neff; granddaughters, Alexis (Bryan) Chandler, to whom she passed on her entrepreneurial spirit and Kristin Neff, and her nephews Steve Scott, John Scott and Daniel Nave.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Myers; parents, James and Neva Scott; brother, Richard (Sharon) Scott; sister, Patricia (Roy) Nave.

We take comfort knowing that Mary Lou and Kenny are once again traveling together down Route 66. When it’s time to travel there, I think I’ll wear a smile, I’ll say good-bye to those I love, but only for a while, knowing there are others who have traveled there alone, who cannot wait to greet me and to whisper “Welcome Home.”

In keeping with Mary Lou’s wishes, services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home.
