Janice M. (Howard) Daugherty

November 18, 1940 ~ January 11, 2025 84 Years Old

Janice Daugherty, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on January 10, 2025, with her husband, Doug Daugherty by her side.

Janice Howard’s journey began on a sunny November 18, 1940, in Frankford, Indiana, Janice grew up during the vibrant post-war era. She often reminisced about the fabulous fifties, painting vivid pictures of riding the bus in South Bend’s bustling downtown shopping district in its heyday. Her stories brought to life cherished memories of the Robertson Tea Room, the Milady Shop, the Frances Shop—where she proudly worked—and sneaking away to have lunch at the famed Philadelphia restaurant.

A proud graduate of South Bend Central High School’s Class of 1959, Janice embraced her Bear pride throughout her life and was fondly remembered by the countless entries in her yearbooks. Like many young women of her generation, she fell head over heels for Elvis Presley, a love she displayed in her home through an array of sculptures, decorations, and memorabilia.

Janice married her high school sweetheart, Francis Leroy Allsop, and together they built a family filled with love and laughter. They were blessed with three children: Christine (Andrew Mihail), Kimberly Ann (Jeff) Arthur, and Bradley. After Francis’s passing, Janice found love again and shared 24 wonderful years of marriage with Doug Daugherty which added to those who loved her to include Karen (Jack) Gillean, Gayle (Tom) Washburn, and Shaun (Stephanie) Daugherty.

Janice was the heart of her family, known for her kindness and generosity. Whether making cheese and crackers or arts and crafts with her grandchildren, playing croquet, or enjoying a quiet game of solitaire on her computer, she cherished every moment with her loved ones.

Her love for her country was evident in her wardrobe, often adorned with American flag-themed attire. She was a proud and active member of the Red Hat Society, attending meetings alongside her sister and best friend, Dee Dallich.

Janice worked for many years at May Oberfell Lorber law firm, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Francis, her son, Bradley, and her sister, Barbara.

Janice’s memory will live on in the hearts of her husband, Doug; her daughters, her sister, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, her stepchildren, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a beautiful soul who touched the lives of all who knew her.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers or a service, the family requests donations be made to the Center for Hospice or the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation, where 85% of contributions are dedicated to finding a cure.

Janice Daugherty lived a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace.
