ELKHART - John E. Burbridge, 76, died at 4:25 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in Elkhart General Hospital. He was born to Vern and Catherine (Bailey) Burbridge July 1, 1931, in South Bend. He married Norma Eckstein September 4, 1953, in South Bend. She died in 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen Burbridge of South Bend and Betsy (Mitch) Smole of Elkhart; three grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Carolyn) Burbridge; and a cousin, Doris Shaum of Indianapolis, IN.
In earlier years John was employed by Studebaker in South Bend. He retired from General Motors American Axle Division in Three Rivers in 1997. He was a graduate of South Bend Central High School; served as a usher for Notre Dame for over 40 years, and was a supervisor in the press box; was a 50-year charter member of the Council Oak Masonic Lodge #745, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend; and served on the board of directors of Real Services.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the Hartzler-Gutermuth Inman Funeral Home, 403 West Franklin St., Elkhart, where there will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held in Hubbard Hill Estates Chapel, 28070 County Road 24 West, Elkhart, at 10 a.m. on Monday, with burial at Rice Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
