John Cecil Mull Jr.

MICHIGAN CITY - With family in attendance, John C. Mull, 83, formerly of Duneland Beach, Michigan City, passed away peacefully the night of March 4th at the White Oaks Retirement Residence, Lawton, Michigan. John was born on April 13, 1930, the first of three children, to John C. Mull, Sr. and Marjorie (Lehman) Mull in South Bend, Indiana.

A good student and athlete, he achieved valedictorian of his senior class at South Bend Central High School in 1948 and lettered in tennis, basketball and baseball. He received a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, in 1952. In September that year he married Joan "Dodie" Kaniewski of South Bend, a marital union that lasted until her death in June 2013.

Surviving children are Dave Mull (Kathy Terpstra) of Paw Paw, Michigan, and Mindy Mull of Oakland, California. Their youngest child, Steve Mull, preceded them in death in April of 2013. Also surviving are brother, Richard (Dick) Mull (Dolly Bankowski) of Three Rivers, Michigan and Phoenix, Arizona, and sister, Alice Anthony (Alex Iantuono) of Danville, California. Granddaughters, Eve Bostick and Zoe Bostick of California also survive as do step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Randall, Jake Randall and Jesse Boven of Michigan.

John received a law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1962 and worked for Associates Financial Services in South Bend. In 1967, he took a job at the Continental Bank of Chicago where he became a senior vice president before retiring in 1992. He attended Notre Dame Catholic Church in Michigan City and sang in the choir. Music was a big part of his life as he played the piano and loved belting out Frank Sinatra tunes, waking up singing almost every day at his retirement home. He was also an avid golfer, longtime member of Long Beach Country Club and a fan of Notre Dame football. In retirement, he enjoyed maintaining his and Dodie's houses and gardens in Duneland Beach and Sun City, Arizona. He also enjoyed fishing and sailing on Lake Michigan and had an abiding love of nature and a childlike curiosity-he could not resist skipping a stone, throwing a snowball, finding a four-leaf clover or marveling at the stars.
