Herbert Letoni Sanders - Class Of 1970 VIEW PROFILE

Herbert Letoni Sanders

Herbert L. Sanders, Sr., 69 years of age, passed away at his home on Friday, July 16, 2021.  He was born in South Bend on July 31, 1951 to the late Estella (Weatherspoon) and Huston Sanders, Sr.  Herbert graduated from Central High School in South Bend.  In December of 1971 he was married to Lurene Johnson and from this union they were blessed with three children.  He later met Markeyta Penn and were blessed with one child.

Herb, as many affectionately called him, had a smile with dimples that would light up any room.  He loved music and dancing and was a singer with a beautiful voice and self-taught musician.  Herbert loved to play his guitars and saxophones.  Herbert enjoyed intellectual conversations about world news and politics.  He was a hardworking man and worked until his health failed him.  He retired from Curtis Products after 26 years of service where he formed many friendships. 

Herbert leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, LeTonja (Jerome Scott) Sanders of South Bend, Aminata Sanders of Memphis, TN., sons, Herbert Sanders, Jr. of Memphis, TN., Houston Sanders of Niles, MI.  He also leaves behind his five grandchildren, LaDarius Gorden, Jada Gorden, Colina Sanders, Letonia Sanders, Brandon Birgs and three great-grandchildren, Asher Gorden, Noah Gardner, and Ryleigh Sanders.  Also surviving is his sister, Vera Jean Sanders.  Along with his wonderful friend of 20 years, Marilyn Jenkins, and her children, Twila, Ambrose, Simone, and Uriah.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Huston Sanders, Jr., Dwight Sanders, and Leonard Scruggs, sisters, Geraldine Flowers, Betty Jo (Wajihah) Scruggs – Sabir, Maxine Dorn, and his niece, Tamara Flowers.

The family of the late Herbert L. Sanders, Sr. would like to give our special thanks to Marilyn Jenkins and Markeyta Penn for taking such great care of Herbert.  We would also like to express our sincere gratitude for each expression of concern and love shown during this difficult time.  Thank you for your prayers and encouragement.

Services for Herbert will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN 46614.  Friends may visit with the family beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions in Herbert’s honor can be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Pl, Mishawaka, IN 46545 or your local American Cancer Society.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
