SOUTH BEND - Marilyn J. Sellers passed November 25 at South Bend's Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born September 25,1932 in South Bend where she lived her entire life. The daughter of Harold and Gladys Shaw (both deceased), she was preceded in death by her step-mother Pearl, siblings George Shaw, Elizabeth (Betsy) Detterich, Jane Ward, James Shaw, Edwin Shaw, Eleanor Bogue, Sally LuPiba, Phyllis Pearson, Helene Werner and Nancy Kealey. Surviving sisters are Patricia Wagner of Coral Gables and Barbara Burks of South Bend. Marilyn married her high school sweetheart Harley of South Bend in 1951 and had been married 62 years when he passed in 2013. A 1950 graduate of Central High School, Marilyn worked for a time at Chicago Motor Club (AAA) as a travel agent and she put her considerable sewing skills to good use making custom drapery at Wyman's Department Store. In 1978 Marilyn founded and directed the Northwest Children's Learning Center for many years and remained part of the organization until her death. She was active on the church board. Harley and Marilyn have 3 children: Harley Sellers of Kona, HI, married to Vivian (Burgess); Roger Sellers of Bailey, CO, married to Karen (Lair); and Marlene Raynor of Orange Co., CA. The 6 grandchildren are Gus Sellers, Laura (Sellers) VanDorn married to Darin, Jennifer (Sellers) Edwards married to Joshua, Scott Sellers married to Ellen (Akin), Brooke Raynor and Dalton Raynor. Three great-grandchildren, Garrett and Olivia VanDorn and Matilda Edwards are now part of the family tree. Marilyn's hobbies were sewing, playing Bridge, making jig-saw puzzles, cooking and traveling in the motor home with Harley. Marilyn and Harley were long time members of South Bend Turners. Marilyn's caring, kindness and generosity has spread coast to coast. She served as friend, advocate and guardian of several needy elderly people and treated them as family. She will be known for her never ending service through-out the community for many, many years. There will be a memorial service on Sat. Dec 3 at Northwest United Methodist Church, 21855 Brick Road, South Bend, IN 46628. A social gathering and greeting will be 1:00-3:00 followed by the memorial service at 3:00, then a meal. The family invites guests to remain and socialize afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marilyn's memory to the church above and/or Hospice Foundation.
