SOUTH BEND - Robert J. Mackin, 91, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2016, in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Robert was born on February 18, 1925, in LaPorte, Indiana, to John L. and Ann M. (Rose) Mackin. He retired from the Bendix Corporation, where he was employed for 37 years as a Supervisor of Production Material Control. On August 20, 1949, he married Elizabeth Kaszas, who preceded him in death on July 24, 1999. On February 3, 2001, he married Marian Akens, who preceded him in death on July 28, 2015. Robert is survived by two daughters, Joanne Mackin of Plymouth, Indiana, and Kelly (Thomas) Bruce of Niles, Michigan; one stepdaughter, Susan (Robert Feldten) Akens of Benton Harbor, Michigan; three sons, Patrick (Nancy) Mackin of New Carlisle, Indiana, John (Susan) Mackin of Dyer, Indiana, and Christopher (Lisa) Mackin of South Bend, Indiana; three stepsons, J. James (Anne) Akens of Falmouth, Massachusetts, Kenneth (Margaret) Akens of South Bend, Indiana, and Robert Akens of Wasilla, Alaska; five grandchildren, Christopher Mackin, Kellen Mackin, Stephen, Mackin, Sarah Mackin and Julie Mackin Kushman; five step-grandchildren, Celena Akens, Briana (Jon) Harned, Michael (Mayuko) Akens, Christopher Akens and Robert T. Akens; three great-grandchildren, Brady Kushman, Andrew Kushman, and Hank Mackin; two sisters, Rosemary Hiple of Munster, Indiana, and Marilyn (Dr. John) Toepp of South Bend, Indiana; and one brother, James Mackin of Kansas City, Missouri. Robert was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Beth Mackin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2016, in the Sanctuary of St. Paul's Chapel. Private Committal Services and Entombment will take place later Wednesday at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. A Visitation will take place from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. As a child, Robert's family were Charter Members of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He attended grade school at Holy Cross and was still a member of Holy Cross Parish. Robert was a 1943 graduate of South Bend Central High School and a 1949 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he received a degree in Business Administration. He was a United States Navy veteran who served during WW II. Robert was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #553 where he was a past Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Fr. J.A. Nieuwland Fourth Degree. Robert was the Secretary and Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus #553 Bowling League for 50 years and a past President of the Knights of Columbus International Bowling Association. He was inducted into the Knights of Columbus International Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the South Bend Bowling Association Hall of Fame and Director of Chippewa Bowl Sr. Club for 15 years. Robert was a member of the former V.F.W. Golden Hill Post #8748; D.A.V. Chapter 6; Notre Dame St. Joseph Valley Alumni Club; and Bendix Management Retirees. Memorial contributions may be directed to Gilbault Children's Services or the Center for Hospice Care, Inc.
