Crash Near Mall Fatal to Driver

Robert Kiskowski, Cottage Grove, was killed just before 1 a.m. Sunday on Miami St. just south of the entrance to Scottsdale Mall when he lost control of his car and it struck a utility pole. Kiskowski was thrown from the car on impact and the auto slid up the embankment on the east side of the street before sliding back down on top of him.

The Victim was driving north on Miami, police reports stated, when the wheels of his auto apparently left the right side of the roadway. When Kiskowski jerked his wheel to get pack on the road, he lost control and crossed the center line striking the pole in front of 4829 Miami. The impact flipped the vehicle and threw Kiskowski from it. It slid up the embankment, according to Lt. Vincent Nagy, on its top and then slid back over Kiskowski.

Nagy and Sgt. Larry Blume agreed that the man's life would have been saved if he had been wearing a seatbelt or a harness. Police said the auto. which was destroyed, was owned by Catherine Forsythe of 714 Cottage Grove.

Kiskowski was a therapist at the St. Joseph County Mental Health Center. Born June 8, 1947, in South Bend, he had lived here all his life.

On June 19, 1971, in Mishawaka, he married Marilyn Canfield, who survivies.
