Oct. 24, 1947 - Oct. 8, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Dr. Joseph "Kambui" Jennings Sr. succumbed to a sudden death on October 8 in Atlanta, GA. He was born to James Martin and Peggy Vance Jennings on October 24, 1947, in South Bend, Indiana. Dr. Jennings was President and Founder of Second Chances Outreach Inc., working to carry out the mission of preventing youth violence by providing positive alternatives to gang violence involvement, drug use, bullying, and other high-risk behaviors. Dr. Jennings was a motivational speaker, travelling the world with his mission of "Change" campaign. Dr. Jennings developed the R.A.W. D.A.W.G.S. Program in communities across the country designed to help boys become young men without the influence of the streets. In 2006 Dr. Jennings launched a new effort with the help of a "Communities Empowering Youth" grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In 1994 -1995 he served on the Koch Crime Commission as was commissioned by Kansas Governor Joan Finney. Dr. Jennings was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Destiny School of Ministry. He served as a National Youth Advocate on President George W. Bush's Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS in 2002-2004. He was featured on a host of local and nationally syndicated television and radio shows including Fox News, NBC News, The Ricki Lake Show and The Jenny Jones Show, and was keynote speaker for an FBI/CIA Gang Prevention Program on the C-SPAN Network. Dr. Jennings leaves to mourn his memory a loving mother, Peggy "O.G." Jennings; 8 sons and 8 daughters; 60 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 8 brothers; 4 sisters; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Dr. Jennings was preceded in death by his father, James Martin Jennings, Sr.; grandmothers, Loretta and Katherine; sister, Patricia Adams; and uncle, Byron Payne. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 18, at Cobb Funeral Home, 3525 S. Michigan St., South Bend. The funeral service for Dr. Jennings is at 12 noon Saturday, October 19, with visitation one hour before the service at the funeral home. Professional services are entrusted to COBB FUNERAL HOME.
