Mary A Johnson (Broderick) - Class Of 1953

RICHMOND, IN –

Central 1953 Mary A. (Johnson) Broderick, age 81, of Richmond, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Reid Health.

Born January 23, 1935, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to Herbert and Marie Smith Johnson, Mary had lived in Richmond for over 20 years. She was a 1953 graduate of South Bend Central High School. Mary worked at the Defoe Shipbuilding Company, where she earned several U.S. Navy commendations. She worked for the U.S. Air Force Intelligence at the Panama Canal and the Richmond State Hospital helping retired veterans. Mary was an apartment/hotel manager for 20 years and Junior Achievement secretary for 7 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Mary was a member and three-time past president of the American Legion Harry Ray Post #65 Women's Auxiliary and lifetime member and past president of the VFW Kirk-Little Post 1108 Women's Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, John ‘Jack' Mason Broderick of Richmond; daughter, Viva M. (Dr. William) Hathaway of Virginia Beach, Virginia; son, Mike D. (Viola) Smith of Richmond; four grandchildren, Jay (Dinene) Smith of Ottawa, Ohio, Michael (fiancee Jackie) Smith of Columbus, Ohio, and Joshua (Jackie) Hathaway and Christina Crater, both of Virginia Beach, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Dominick Smith of Defiance, Ohio, and Ella Hathaway, Kylie Crater, McKenzie Crater and Audrey Hathaway, all of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sister, Mildred Mervine of Niles, Michigan; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her second husband, David Hughes, who died April 7, 2003; first husband, Jay C. Smith, who died February 13, 1994; parents; and three brothers, Alfred, Robert and Herbert.

Visitation for Mary A. Broderick will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Palmer Funeral Home, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, Indiana. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2016, at Palmer Funeral Home, with Rev. Ted Chalk officating. Burial will be at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.
