Cathryn R. “Cassie” (DeMunck) Olson

SOUTH BEND - Cathryn Roberta “Cassie” Olson passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 8:00 pm at the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility, South Bend, IN. Cassie was born on October 17, 1930, in Terre Haute, IN, the only child of Mary (Mazall) and Gerard DeMunck, who both preceded her in death. She graduated from Central High School in 1948 where she made and developed lifelong friendships.

After high school Cassie worked for a short time at a local bank and Indiana Bell Telephone. On June 10, 1950, she married Eugene Richard “Gene” Olson at Holy Cross Catholic Church. They were blessed with four children, Gregory (Kathryn) Olson, Granger, IN, Jennifer “Jodi” Olson, Plano, TX, Lisabeth Olson Hack, Columbia, SC, and Jonathon Olson, Maui, Hawaii. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Ryan (Erin Jones) Owen, Jason (Shannon) Owen, Joshua Hack, Lucas (Charla) Hack, Drew Olson and Abigail Olson; along with five great-grandchildren, Eli Owen, Hannah Owen, Asher Jones Owen, Colton Hack and Reganne McMahon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, in June 2014, her parents, and her dear Uncle, Johnny Mazall.

Cassie led a full and fruitful life. She was selfless when raising her children as a stay-at-home Mom and continued doting on all of her grandchildren. As her children grew Cassie went back to work for many years at Robertson's Department Store and Sears. Her hobbies included calligraphy, crossword puzzles, and card playing especially Bridge and Cribbage. She was a voracious reader and was self-educated in the areas of theology, philosophy, literature, art and music. This love of the arts culminated by her trips to Europe visiting the sites, museums and beautiful churches. At Healthwin, she kept active with bingo, dice games, and the arts and crafts programs.

The family would like to thank the residents, doctors, medical personnel and staff at Healthwin for making Cassie feel at home. A special note of gratitude to her friends, Greg Oesch, Dick Clauser, Joan Corthier and Judy Neeser, as they visited Cassie often and offered much support.

Family and friends may visit at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend, IN, on Friday, February 26, 2016, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1020 Wilber St., South Bend, IN, at 1:00 PM Saturday, February 27, 2016. Graveside Services will follow at Highland Cemetery, Portage Avenue, South Bend, IN.
