Condolences

SOUTH BEND - Alonzo Whitlock, Jr., lifelong resident of South Bend, went from labor to reward at 5:00 pm on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at West Bend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on March 6, 1939, in South Bend, IN, to the union of the late Alonzo and Lillie B. (McDougle) Whitlock, Sr.

Alonzo received his formal education in South Bend, attending Oliver Elementary School and later was an outstanding football player for Central High School.

At the age of 16, Alonzo professed his hope in Christ. He then became an ordained minister in the Big Creek Association of Regular Primitive Baptist, and later became the minister of Little Flower Church, where he served faithfully for several years.

“Junior,” as he was affectionately called by his family, loved to travel. His favorite cities were Montreal and Quebec.

Junior didn't have any biological children, but he loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his own children. Junior's memory will be cherished by his two loving sisters, Mother Mary Alice Edwards, Mrs. Joyce (Morris) Redding, Sr; five nieces, His Caregiver - Ms. Giovanna Edwards, Mrs. Cecilia Edwards (Andrew) Brown, Mrs. Gloria Edwards White, Ms. Renee Redding, Ms. Denice Redding; four nephews, Mr. Shawn (Rosie) Edwards, Mr. Howard (Dawn) Edwards, Mr. Morris Redding, Jr., Mr. Anthony Redding. Junior also has several great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, along with other relatives, family and family friends.

In addition to his parents, Alonzo was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Mrs. Gracie Barnes; paternal grandfather, Mr. Fred Whitlock; niece, Ms. Marcel E. Redding; cousins, Mr. Isaiah Whitlock, Sr. and Mr. Chris Whitlock.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Maureen Ziboh, family physician, Dr. William Kamanda, oncologist, the staff at West Bend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, especially Moses Naina and the second-floor staff. Also, the family would like to thank the members of New Testament M.B. Church and Deacon Denis Patton for the love you showed Alonzo.

Funeral services for Alonzo will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Palmer Funeral Home-West Chapel. Elder Claude Trent Rogers will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit the family from 12:00 - 1:00 pm prior to the services on Saturday at West Chapel.
