Sharon Lee Weaver (Batten)

Sharon Lee Batten

Aug. 21, 1942 - Nov. 1, 2017

SOUTH BEND- Sharon Lee (Weaver) Batten, 75, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 with family at her side at the Center for Hospice, South Bend, Indiana, after a prolonged illness.

Sharon, or to some, Sunny, as to match her overall outlook and disposition, was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on August 21, 1942, the daughter of the late Levi and Martha (Simmons) Weaver. On October 3, 1964 she married Robert Batten, who preceded her in life this past May, in South Bend, the first couple to be married in the newly built Crest Manor Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by their children Darin Batten of Goshen, Craig Batten (Meghan) of South Hempstead, NY and Dawn Batten of Dunnellon, FL; and five grandchildren, Matthew Batten, Jeffery Fisher, Jason Fisher, Ashlynn Batten and Hunter Batten. She is also survived by an older sister, Joan Straup, of South Bend. In addition to her husband of fifty-two years she was preceded in death by her parents.

Sharon was a very good student in school and started her professional career working for The Associates in South Bend, Indiana after high school. She left there upon the birth of their first son to be a stay home mom, but as the children grew, she returned to work as the Church Secretary at Crest Manor for many years and then later she found a gift in a field that few would have initially guessed. She used that sunny disposition and became a bartender, first with Wander Inn and McKinley Pub in Mishawaka, but later at the VFW Post 360 and lastly at the Ryan A. Balmer Post 161 of the American Legion, both of Mishawaka, as well. There she was able to greet and serve the veterans and guests and share her wonderful smile.

Sharon grew up in the strong faith and background of the Anabaptist Church of the Brethren. Her faith in Jesus was absolute and while in later years her participation in the Church community waned there was always a strong connection to her upbringing in the Church. The family would like to think that the following passages are appropriate here: From the Gospel according to St. John – Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” John 11:25-26. And from the Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians – For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18. Sharon, along with Bob and the others who have been waiting, are now together, arranging the furniture in our Father’s house to make it home. Let us not be sad but in our hearts be joyous and grateful for now she is at peace and is with the Lord.

No formal visitation or services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct, South Bend, IN 46637.

Elkhart Cremation Services is entrusted with her arrangements.
