Patrick "Pat" N. Downey, 73, of Lakeville, IN passed away at 10:31 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 22, 1941 in Dowagiac, MI to the late William and Viola (Connors) Downey. On November 14, 1964 in South Bend, IN he married the former Sue (Eastwood) Downey

Mr. Downey is survived by his wife, Sue Downey; three daughters, Jean (Norm) Hershberger of New Paris, IN, Kimberly (John) Meiss of Mishawaka, IN and Jennifer Downey of South Bend, IN; two grandchildren, David Hershberger and Josie Meiss; and three brothers, Duke (Kathleen ) Downey, Michael (Brenda) Downey and Dennis Downey, all of South Bend, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Downey.

Mr. Downey moved to South Bend in 1958 coming from the Upper Peninsula, MI. He graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1960. After graduation, he served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corp. Following his honorable discharge and service in the reserves, he took work at International Harvester where he advanced from parts clerk to branch accountant. Mr. Downey then co-owned and operated a business at Lakeville Truck and Body Shop repairing heavy duty equipment. Later, he was a truck driver for Towne Air Freight retiring in 2003. Mr. Downey was a member of the American Legion Post #363 in Lakeville, holding several office positions over the years including Post Commander and Finance Officer. He was most faithful to the organization and his military brethren by placing flags on fallen veterans’ graves in local cemeteries to honor their service.

In honoring Pat’s wishes, no services will be held. Burial will take place at a later date at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend, IN will assisting the family.

Douglas Jay Baer (1960)

We got to talk once before his death. My memories go deep with him. He used to pick me up at my house. Then, we'd push my old car to the nearest hill, jump in and pop the clutch to start it. So sorry I can't sit down and visit with him now.
