Gerald Davis Carter

Reported by Buzz Hayworth

Gerald Davis Carter

Dec. 27, 1941 - Mar. 18, 2005

Gerald Davis Carter, 63, of South Bend, passed away in Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was born December 27, 1941, to the union of Frederick Douglas Carter Sr. and Inez Smith, both preceding him in death. Frederick D. Carter III of South Bend, Indiana, is the sole survivor from this union.

Gerald graduated from Central High School in 1960, after achieving varsity letters in both track and field and cross country, along with regional and state honors in both sports. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on a guided missile destroyer stationed with the Pacific Fleet. Having fulfilled his military obligation, and the family precedent of all men serving in the Navy, he went to work at Raco for a brief period. Shortly afterward he made a career change by securing a post-secondary education in computers and employment with the National Bank, and subsequent to that with Data Link as a computer operator.

Surviving his death are two sons, Kevin Carter (Tracy) of Indianapolis, Indiana, a son embraced by the union, and Gerald D. Carter (Angelica) of Indianapolis, Indiana, a son born of the union with Carolyn E. Braboy of South Bend, Indiana. In addition, two grandchildren, Kevin Carter and Ciera Carter, both of Indianapolis, Indiana, survive his death.

Subsequent to the dissolution of this union, he shared the twilight of his life with the family of Jada Roberson and her children, Markest and Jada Flowers.

He was baptized at Pilgrim Baptist Church of South Bend, Indiana, was a member of the CB Club, with the handle of "Space Ghost," and was a member of the Boy Scout Troop 460, a troop which his father scout-mastered.

He leaves behind three aunts, Mary Lou "Sis" Williams, Florence Ross and Leola Carter, all of South Bend, and a host of relatives from the Carter family, (and his position as election chairman of the Carter Fellowship Foundation), the Braboy family, and many friends, all of whom will miss him.

Visitation services for Mr. Gerald Davis Carter Sr. will be held on Wednesday, March 23, in the Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, Inc., 2702 Lincoln Way West, from 6 to 8 p.m.; funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 24, in the Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home. Burial will follow funeral services at Riverview Cemetery.

The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home as been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
