Carolyn J. Raines, 67, of South Bend, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend after a courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Raines was born on August 30, 1940 in South Bend to the late Roy and Helen (Rodeen) Nelson. She has been a lifelong resident. On May 4, 1963 in Chicago, IL, she married David K. Raines who survives.
Along with her husband, David, of 44 years, survivors include her three daughters; Nina (Tim) Conrad of St. Joseph, MI, Michele Raines of Arlington, VA, and Jennifer (Jeff) Brown of Mishawaka; five grandchildren, Jordan, Cameron and Caleb Conrad, and Alexandra and Dylan Brown; and one sister, Mary Lou (Jack) Elder of South Bend.
Mrs. Raines retired from the former Indiana Bell Telephone Company after 32 years of employment. She also was a bookkeeper at St. James Episcopal Church, South Bend. Mrs. Raines was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in South Bend and was involved with many activities within the church. She would volunteer her time and talents to the church for any event, function, or group.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 225 E. Haney Street, South Bend. Rev. Jeff Zell, pastor, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9th, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend and one hour prior to services in the Church on Thursday.
