James L. Powell

April 25, 1945 - April 2, 1997

James Loren Powell, 51, residing on South Bend Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed away following an extended illness at 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, in the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. James was the loving son of Joseph L. and Dorothy Mae Powell, born on April 25, 1945.

He was also the loving father of Kirk Powell of Chicago, III.; the brother of Jack Powell of South Bend, John Powell of Fort Wayne, Ind., Judith Crum of Tampa, Fla., and Tom and Robert Powell, both of Kokomo, Ind. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Schultz of South Bend in 1969.

Jim graduated from South Bend Central High School in June 1963. He soon gained employment at U.S. Steel Southworks in South Chicago, Ill.

He married Terry Beltemacchi of Chicago on July 1965, moved to Chicago in early 1967, and began work at the A. E. Staley Corporation. He finished his career as an executive with Staley in Decatur, Ill., retiring in 1986, subsequently returning to South Bend. Jim was active in his church and community, serving for many years as junior warden at the Church of the Mediator in Chicago.

He was a semi-pro baseball umpire, and was assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop
