Passenger killed as car hits culvert

Thomas S. Barrett, 32, of 615 Rex, died as a result of a single-car accident about 3:30 a.m. today in the 22000 block of Roosevelt Road. He was a  passenger in a car that hit a culvert and a utility pole.

The vehicle was going west on Roosevelt 32 when it ran off the north, and then south sides of the road and struck a fence, police reported. The vehicle then went sideways, striking a culvert and a telephone pole, Detective Sgt. Richard Heyde of the county police reported. The driver suffered only minor injuries in the crash, as did a third occupant.

Sheriff's officers said the youths did not require emergency medical treatment. Officers will confer with the county prosecutor Monday about any charges that may arise from the wreck, Heyde said. Barrett had been seated in the back seat of the car, police reported. He died of internal injuries resulting from the accident, according to Deputy County Coroner Dr. Donald G. White, who pronounced Barrett dead at the scene. The body was taken to Memorial Hospital for an autopsy, and then to the Welsheimer Funeral Home.

Barrett was a student at Indiana University at South Bend. Born July 13, 1944, in South Bend, he had lived most of his life in this area.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ruth Barrett, with whom he lived; a brother, Jack Wright of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Doris Tice of Bristol; a half-brother, Larman E. Barrett of Detroit, and a half-sister, Mrs. Clyphane Hamilton of South Bend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the. Westminster Presbyterian Church. Rev. Harry Collier, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may, call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William.

Barrett was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, and a four-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force
