Robert Bruce Seifert

Mar. 10, 1943 - Feb. 1, 2011

SOUTH BEND - Bob leaves behind many circles of friends and acquaintances, some of long-standing, others of more recent origin. These friendships grew around common interests and were nurtured by conversation and humor (particularly of Bob's own distinctive brand), creating lasting bonds and personal traditions. Some of these circles of friends intersected with each other, and others were private and set apart from one another. Many of us feel honored to have known some part of Bob's life. We will miss his illuminating (and frequently hilarious) stories, his helping hand, his caring commitment to his friends and acquaintances, his meticulous craftsmanship, his passion for creating and maintaining beautiful gardens, and his deep knowledge of jazz and the blues.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, Otto Seifert, and mother, Verna (Fenska) Seifert. His brother, Ron Seifert, survives along with his wife, Judy, and daughter, Erika. He was born and brought up in South Bend, graduating from South Bend Central High School in 1962. While attending Florida Keys Junior College he was on the Dean's / President's list each semester, and was twice elected to the Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. After receiving his Associate in Arts Degree in 1972, he attended Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and Teacher Certification in 1976. In 1977 he augmented his art training by working at the W.O.R.K.S. Silkscreen Design Studio in San Francisco. After returning to South Bend, he embarked on his longterm employment at Framer's Workshop where he attended to the framing needs of the community for over 33 years. Many of us came to depend on his artistry and craftsmanship as a framer. He also taught at the South Bend Museum for many years, beginning in 1979 and gave over 20 years to the preparation of exhibitions at the Colfax Campus Gallery. Bob participated in numerous exhibitions and was the juror for others. He received awards for his work and grants for innovative educational projects.

Bob passed away quickly and apparently peacefully on the 1st of February, 2011, just over a month before his 68th birthday. He was surrounded by years of his art work, an ever-sustaining focus in his life. This work will be on exhibit at the Colfax Campus Gallery (914 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN) from April 22 to June 3, 2011. On Friday, May 6, there will be a "Celebration of Life: Remembering Bob" from 7 to 9 p.m. Come with stories about, and pictures of, Bob. We will learn more about the fabric of his life from each other.

Memorial gifts may be made either to Erika's Education Fund or to the Colfax Campus Gallery. Make checks out to Erika Seifert (for Erika's Education Fund) or South Bend Heritage Foundation (for Colfax Campus Gallery), and mail to South Bend Heritage Foundation, c/o D. Andrews, 803 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN 46616.
