Susan Marie Schaut (Taylor)

Susan "Susie" Marie (Schaut) Taylor

November 22, 1943 ~ September 20, 2025

Susan Marie Taylor, 81, of South Bend peacefully passed away on the morning of Saturday, September 20, 2025 at home due to complications of a short-term illness.

“Susie” was born on November 22, 1943 in South Bend to the late Gustave and Dorothy (Barzo) Schaut. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Louie along with her oldest brother, James Schaut. Left to cherish her memory are son, Russell (Blanca) Taylor, brother, Steve (Becky) Schaut, and many other family members and friends who dearly loved her.

Susie graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1962.  There is where she met her high school sweetheart Louie Taylor. They got married at the Cathedral of St. James in South Bend on October 10, 1964 and had a son, Russ.

Susie had many occupations throughout her life including working at Woolworth’s and Wyman’s in South Bend in the 1960’s, selling Tupperware in the 1970’s, a teller at AAA Federal Credit Union on Bendix Drive in the 1980’s, and an accounts receivable clerk for the Tire Rack in the 1990’s, which is where she retired from in May 1998.  During her retirement, she had a number hobbies that included knitting, crocheting, traveling, and listening to the music of Elvis Presley. But her favorite pastime that she really liked was Elvis related.  She truly enjoyed assisting Elvis tribute artist Doug Church with his shows. And if that wasn’t enough, she loved going to Bonnie Doons Drive-In in Mishawaka every Sunday afternoon to catch up and socialize with her friends!

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the entire staff at the Center for Hospice Care for the care and compassion they provided for Susie.

Visitation for Susie will be held 2:00pm – 4:00pm on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at St. Joseph Funeral Home, Mayflower Road in South Bend.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00am, on Friday, September 26, 2025 in the funeral home chapel.  Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545 or Pet Refuge, 4626 S. Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614 in memory of Susan Taylor.
