Janice Elayne (Nutting) Cohen

June 13, 1943 ~ July 20, 2026 (age 83)

Janice "Jan" Elayne Cohen (Nutting), 83, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, July 20, 2026 surrounded by her children.

Jan was born on June 13, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late William E. Nutting and Jennie A. (Maeyens) Nutting.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dennis L. Cohen; her parents; her son, Ronnie Popielski; her great-granddaughter, Aubry Maronek; her sister, June Fyffe; her sister-in-law, Nancy Wilma; and her brothers, Bill Nutting and Terry Nutting.

Jan is lovingly remembered by her children, Tina Popielski of South Bend, Indiana; Peggy Jankowski of South Bend, Indiana; Mark (Retha) Popielski of Lewis, Indiana; Aaron (Tammy) Popielski Sr. of Mishawaka, Indiana; and Mike Popielski of South Bend, Indiana. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Tina (Michael) Clark of Columbus, Ohio; her daughter-in-law, Jenny Popielski of Buchanan, Michigan; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Pam Miller of North Carolina; her brother-in-law, Barry Cohen of Virginia; along with many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

After retiring from Liberty Mutual as an insurance policy rater, Jan  briefly worked part-time at Center for Hospice. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved tending to her flower gardens, especially her cherished yellow roses, watching the birds and squirrels that visited her yard, and, above all, spending time with her family. She often mused that she should have received an honorary nursing degree with all the past family members she served in their sick and dying days. As a “career caregiver” she struggled with the transition from caregiver to care receiver. Her love, kindness, and devotion to those she loved were the center of her life and will be remembered by all who knew her.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana. The family kindly requests that those attending wear casual attire.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jan’s memory to Center for Hospice.

Jan’s family finds comfort in the many memories she leaves behind and in knowing she will forever remain in their hearts.
