Elwood Allen “Bud” Hayes

Dec. 6, 1942 - Dec. 16, 2002

Elwood "Bud" Hayes, 60, of Lilac Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16th, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Hayes was born Dec. 6, 1942, in South Bend, and resided in the Michiana area his lifetime. Bud retired in 1995 from the South Bend Police Department as a detective sergeant, having worked for several years in the Detective Bureau. At the time of becoming ill in October, he worked as an insurance adjuster.

Bud graduated from the former Central High School and Ball State University.

He is survived by his mother, Mardell E. Hayes of South Bend; two sisters, Sheryl J. Newman and Beverly J. Kaczmarek, both of South Bend; and by six nephews, four nieces, three great-nieces and three great-nephews.

He was a member of the Ardmore Brethren Church and South Bend Police FOP Lodge #36. Bud was active, in. the Democratic Party. Bud will not only be missed by his loving family, he will be missed by numerous friends and church family.

Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19th, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located a at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20th, in Ardmore Brethren Church, located at 23370 Ardmore Trail, South Bend.

Friends will be received one hour prior to service time in the church. Officiating the service will be Pastor Ray Astinall. Burial to follow at Mt. Peasant Cemetery. All memorial contributions to Hospice of St. Joseph County.

The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extend deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Hayes family
