Lois Irene Hagle (Bird) - Class Of 1956 VIEW PROFILE

Lois Irene Hagle (Bird)

Lois Bird

October 3, 1938 – June 22, 2019

Lois Irene (Hagle) Bird, 80, entered into her eternal rest on Jun 22, 2019, at Healthwin Specialized Care in South Bend.

Born in her grand-parents little farm house, she was welcomed by her loving parents Edward and Stella (Samuels) Hagle.  Though an only child, she was surrounded by her large extended family.  Every Sunday, the family gathered for dinner at the Samuels’ farm in Plymouth, Indiana, where Lois spent many hours with her cousins.

Raised in South Bend, Indiana, she attended Central High School, Class of 1956.  A highlight of her freshman year, was that Central won the State Basketball Championship.

Lois was an avid bowler for over 40 years. She participated in over 30 National and State tournaments. She was on the Board of Directors for the South Bend/Mishawaka Woman Bowling Congress and was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame in the South Bend, Mishawaka WBC.

Lois waited until her youngest child began first grade to begin working. She was hired by Wheel Horse Corporation as part of the secretary pool.  Eventually, Toro Corporation purchased Wheel Horse and moved its operations to Baraboo, Wisconsin.  She was the only employee to make the transition to Baraboo, and retired as a traffic controller after 40 years in 2006.

Leaving many great friends behind, Lois returned to Indiana in 2009, due to a stroke that took her sight. Over the last 8 years she built many wonderful friendships at Healthwin Specialized Care, both residence and staff.

Lois is survived by two daughters, Lorie Murphy of Poole, Georgia, and Becky (Chris) Baker of Mishawaka, Indiana; a son, David Bird of Elkhart, Indiana; four grandchildren: Mary (Scott) Weller of Mishawaka, Indiana, Michelle (Matt) Lopshire, of South Whitley, Indiana and Daniel Murphy, of Osceola, Indiana, and Kyle Morman of Poole, Georgia.  Her greatest joy has been her great grandchildren: Austin, Daniel, Tristan, Isaac, Timothy, Samuel and Leo.  She also cherished her three “adopted” great granddaughters, Alexis, Leah and Vivien who meant the world to her.

She is also survived by three aunts, Cleo (Junior) Berger, Ruby Whiteman and Dollie Ketchem, all of Plymouth, Indiana; and her many, many cousins that she loved dearly.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., July 1, 2019, at River Park United Methodist Church, 920 S. 23rd Street, South Bend, IN. Friends may gather an hour prior to the service. If desiring to send flowers, the church office will be open Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28, 2019.  Memorial Gifts in Lois’ name may be sent to Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, 114 N. Ironwood Dr. South Bend, IN 46615, or Healthwin Residential Fund, 20531 Darden Rd, South Bend, IN 46637.
