Freeman Smith

March 2, 1946 ~ October 24, 2024 (age 78)

Freeman Smith, born March 2, 1946, to his parents Joe Arthur and Alma Bennett, was lovingly adopted by Freeman and Nannie B. Smith, who all preceded him in death, he was called home on October 24, 2024. Freeman graduated from Central High School and later received an Associate Degree in Social Work which he dedicated most of his life to. Freeman’s favorite pastimes include being with family and playing cards, especially Pinochle. You could find him directing or singing in multiple choral ensembles when he was not enjoying that.

Freeman was a long-time member of St. Paul Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He leaves a permanent imprint of love and smiles upon the hearts of those he left behind: His partner of 56 years Andre Banks of South Bend, IN, his two children Freeman B. Smith III of Woodstock, GA, and Dayatra R. Smith of South Bend, IN. His lovingly adopted daughters Santia and Matrice both of Minneapolis, MN. Freeman had many siblings Charlotte Anderson (deceased) and Winona Jones Northern both of South Bend, IN, Sharon Jennings of London England, Hilda (Hermon)Jennings-Phillips of Kalamazoo, MI, Aaron Jennings of Miami, FL, Kathy (Elmer) Crosby of South Bend, IN, and Keelon (Ava) Hammond of Fredericksburg, VA. His siblings by choice, who always had a special place in his heart: sisters Karen Powell and Jeanette Harding of Chicago, IL, and Lena Sanders of Tennessee, and brother Rev. Derrick Weaver of Dallas, TX.

Freeman was an amazing father to not only his children but also The Original Seven that he helped raise: Renita Anderson, Terry (Andre) Baldwin, Cheryl Anderson, Geri (Bernard Foster) Anderson, Darryl Anderson, and Albert Anderson all of South Bend, IN, and Catherine Jordan of Atlanta, GA. Freeman was a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and a grandad to twelve. Our hearts will forever be changed, and his love will live on in us all! Rest well “Deddy”, Uncle Brother, Brother, and Friend, we will miss you!

Special thank you to all the caregivers at Fresenius Dialysis Center Nimtz Parkway, Brickyard Healthcare 12th Street, and AuNova Home Care.
