Randolph Leslie Peterson

Randolph "Randy" Leslie Peterson

Sep. 1, 1947 - May 11, 2024

Randolph Leslie Peterson (Randy), age 76 of Granger IN, passed away at Healthwin Hospital where he resided since July 2021 after having a stroke. Randy was born on September 1, 1947, graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1965, and lived in the South Bend area his whole life. He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Dorothy (Arnold) Peterson Burling, his brother, Steve, sister, Jennifer, and son, Kyle. He is survived by wife of nearly 55 years, whom he met at IU, Sherry A. (Rivers) Peterson, his daughter, Dana Sullivan and his grandchildren, Maggie, Pete, Sam, and Joe Sullivan all residing in Granger.

For many years, Randy owned R.L. Peterson Builder Contractor and built homes and did remodeling in Granger and the Michiana area. In the 80’s, he was asked to work for South Bend Sash and Door because he sold so many of their products. The “Pella Fella” eventually ran his own business again and became “Handy Randy”, so he could spend more time golfing at Morris Park Country Club with his many friends. Two of his favorite projects were building a Japanese tea house for a Notre Dame professor and a pool cabana in his daughter’s backyard.

Randy loved playing Little League baseball, riding his bike to his grandparents’ farm in Lydick, following the Chicago Bears, snowmobiling, watching his kids and grandkids do anything. He was smart, witty, self-taught, and had a special connection with animals, especially dogs. It was an ongoing joke that he loved his “granddogs", Charlie & Cooper, more than anyone else.

Randy's family will hold a private service for him. Memorial gifts may be directed to Heartland Small Animal Rescue, Inc., P.O. Box 6033, South Bend, IN 46660, where Charlie & Cooper came from, any other animal shelter, or First Tee, P.O. Box 385, South Bend, IN 46624

Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
