SOUTH BEND - Henry Richard Smith (known as: Richard or Smitty) 62, was born on July 11, 1947 in Statesboro, GA to Wilford and Almarie Smith.

Richard graduated from Central High School in South Bend, IN. At Central he was best in basketball and track & field.

After high school he went on to pursue his education at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS on a Basketball scholarship. At Kansas State he studied history and government. He also attended Bethel College University on South Bend, IN where he studied the arts. Richard was very active in the community. He played for a minor league basketball team in South Bend, he coached Girl's Track & Field at Marquette School in South Bend, he also worked for the South Bend Park Department and also at Notre Dame.

Met and married his wife Davene Smith in 1984. Richard passed from a sudden illness on August 11, 2009 at Memorial Hospital.

He leaves to behind to cherish his memories: his wife, Davene Smith; his mother, Almarie Smith; two sons, Tony (Linda) Capers, Thomas R. (Zena) Capers; three daughters, Sonya L. Trice, Carla M. Smith, and Kesha M. ( Robert) Diaz. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Elaine Smith; two brothers, Carl (Doris) Mainer and Alphonso Smith. He leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death is his father, Wilford Smith; his fraternal grandparents, Will and Clara Smith; his maternal grandparents, Edmond and Estella Mainer; one aunt, Onita Bronson and three uncles, Euless Mainer, Oliver Mainer, C.W. Smith and three grandchildren. He made his church home at the River of Life Church of South Bend, IN Services for Mr. Henry Richard Smith will be held on Monday, August 17, 2009 in the River Of Life Family Church, 530 Ireland Rd., Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Funeral service will begin at noon. Burial will follow funeral service at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The Clark-ONeal Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
