Sylvia Leona Bloch (Paskin)

Sylvia L. Paskin
Feb. 17, 1924 - April 17, 2013

SOUTH BEND - Sylvia L. Paskin, 89, formerly of South Bend, IN, Orlando, FL and more recently Wilmette, IL, is survived by her sons Rick and Steve; daughters-in-law, Debbie and Shannon; and grandchildren, Marc, Kendall and Mike.

She was predeceased by her husband Sam and parents Roy and Ann Bloch. Her son Marc died in 1977.

Sylvia was born in Philadelphia, PA and lived there as a child until a business opportunity took her family to South Bend, IN where Sylvia graduated from Central High School. She then attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN in 1941 and subsequently returned to South Bend to work in the administration departments at the University of Notre Dame and Wyman's Department Store.

She met Sam Paskin in South Bend and they married in 1949. Following Sam's graduation from IU in 1950, they settled in South Bend and raised their family. After their sons were grown, Sylvia and Sam relocated to Orlando, FL, in 1981, where they owned and operated the Midas Muffler Shop on S. Orange Avenue. In addition to working in the office of their Midas Shop, Sylvia was a passionate volunteer at Hubbard House, a "home-away-from-home" for families of out-of-town patients of the Arnold Palmer Hospital. She was also an avid sketch artist and painter, an interest that she had shared with her son Marc. In 2005, Sylvia and Sam moved to Glenview, IL to be closer to their family. She continued her volunteer work at the North Shore Senior Center. Following Sam's death, Sylvia (or Shayne as Sam loved to call her) relocated to the retirement community at Mather Place of Wilmette. Funeral Services will be Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery Chapel on the corner of Jefferson and Logan, Mishawaka, IN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Hubbard House, 29 W. Miller Street, Orlando FL 32806, 407-649-6886.
