Donald F. Betz

Donald F. Betz, 86, of Crown hill Drive, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2005, at Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation. He was born November 3, 1918, in Tiffen, Ohio, to the late Arthur G. and Alta (Warner) Betz. Also preceding him in death were three sisters and Iwo brothers. He Is survived by his loving wife, Bernice; a son, Jim (Becky) Betz of Granger, IN; three grandcIildren, Brittany Betz 01 Granger, Tracy (Travis) Sandilur of Indianapolis and Travis Betz of Los Angeles, CA; and a sister, Melva Wensits of South Bend.

Don grew up in South Bend and graduated from South Bend Central High School. He served In the U.S. Army during WWII In the Military Police. After his service. he became a South Bend Policeman and served honorably for 21 years, retiring in 1963.

After retiring from the police department in South Bend, he and his family moved to Tucson, AZ in 1063, and he worked on the police department there for four years. In 1967, he moved back to South Bend and worked for the South Bend Recreation Department for 15 years, retiring in 1983. Don was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36, AARP, the National Rifle Association and a past member of the Izaak Walton League, South Bend Elks Lodge 4235, South Bend Moose Lodge 458 and Saint Joseph Lodge #45 F&AM. Don was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed traveling and camping with Bernice. Don was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Funeral services well be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. January 6, 2005. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North. 17033 Cleveland Road, with Rev. Herb Buwaida Jr.. of Clay United Methodist Church, officiating. Cremation and burial will follow. Friends may call in the funeral home today. January 5. 2005. from 4 to p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Clay United Methodist Church or to a Charily of the donors choice.
