Bernyce E. (Barton) Sweet

June 18, 1920 - Oct. 22, 1999

Bernyce Ellen Barton was born on June 18, 1920, in Cherokee, Ala. Her husband, Jay Dee Sweet, preceded her in death. Together Jay and Bernyce had four children, Jayan Sweet Allen and Diane Sweet McMillan, both of Atlanta, Ga., Jay Clifton Sweet of Vacaville, Calif, and Robert Milton ‘Sweet of Charlotte, N.C.  Raised Adventist, Bernyce converted to the Methodist faith in the early 1970s, She was a member of the First AME. Zion Church of South Bend, Ind., before her relocation to Charlotte, where she became and remained a faithful member of Weeping Willow AM.E, Zion, Bernyce continued her strong relationship with the Lord as she attended this church,

Bernyce was a graduate of Central High School in South Bend and Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala,

Her employment was as productive as her bubbling personality. She catered events in South Bend and nurtured numer- ‘ous children. In her senior years she was a “greeter” at Wal-Mart.

Her enthusiasm for life took her throughout the United States traveling to distant places. Whether she was on a bowling alley in Las Vegas or a Bed & Breakfast Inn in the N.C. mountains — she never ‘met a stranger. Fondly known as “B.Sweet,’ she instilled wisdom, love and caring for others as her
trademarks. She made life fun and pleasant with her quick wit and constant smile.

Bernyce took into her household many people who then became her extended family, adopting them as her own. She fulfilled her calling in life as a “nurturer” who meets and helps others. She celebrated life, living out each moment to its fullest.

Bemyce is survived by her four children, Jayan, Diane, Jay and Robert. She also leaves to cherish her memory her eight grandchildren, Angela, Ryan, James, Robert, Tyson, Ameer, LaVonna and Cameron; and two great-grandchildren, Tiera and Dolce. Bernyce is also survived by her two sisters, Minnie Smith of St. Louis, Mo., and Lucille Dunson of South Bend; and two brothers, Sam Robert Barton and Owen Barton, both of South Bend; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Weeping Willow A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte. There will be no visitation. The Long & Son Mortuary Service, Charlotte, is handling arrangements.
