Rudolph Schubert, 89, of Dyer, Indiana, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, passed away after a prolonged illness on Monday, August 7, 2006, in Regency Place of Dyer.

Rudolph was born on November 22, 1916, in South Bend, to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Schubert. He was a graduate of South Bend Central High School and was a lifelong resident of South Bend, except for January 1942 to May of 1945, when he served in WWII. In the United States Army, 1st Infantry 44, he received the Distinguished United Citation as squad leader and a Bronze Star, while landing at Omaha Beach on D-day. He also received a Bronze Star at the battle of Monti Cosine in Italy and a 3rd Bronze Star at the Cazirine pass in North Africa. His squad met the Russians south of Berlin at the end of the war. Rudolph received many awards as a sharp shooter in the military.

After the war, Rudolph returned to South Bend and married Irene V. Karwowski in 1945. He worked at Studebaker Car Company until they closed, then at the South Bend School Corporation, in the service building, before retiring in 1987.

Rudolph was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years in 1997.

He is survived by four nieces, Carol (Alan) Swingler of Munster, Indiana, Mary (Matt) Karwowski and Susie (Chris) Karwowski, both of Chicago, Illinois and Melinda (Thomas) Gaylor of Sacramento, California and by two nephews, Robert (Sue) Gaylor of Sante Fe, New Mexico and Joseph Karwowski of Chicago.
There will be no visitation. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated for Rudolph on Friday, August 11, 2006 at 10:30 am EST, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 226 N. Hill Street, South Bend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, White Eagle Chapter #39, 618 Pulaski St., South Bend, IN 46619.
