SOUTH BEND - Charles Albert Price, 64, a former resident of South Bend, Indiana, was killed in a car accident on Tuesday, October 11th, in Maryland. Charles was affectionately known as "Charlie Tuna" and "Headquarters" by friends and family. Charles was born July 7th in South Bend to the late James & Georgia Price.

A graduate of South Bend Central High School, Charles was a three-letter athlete in sports: baseball, football & wrestling. He won third place in the State for wrestling.

Upon graduation, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky, until being sent to Southeast Asia. He was stationed in Phnom Penh during the Vietnam Conflict. As a combat soldier in Vietnam, he earned three Purple Hearts and 17 medals due to his valor and bravery. Some of those medals included the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct, Vietnam Cross of Valor, Combat Infantry Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Charles enrolled in culinary school in Denver, Colorado, and became a certified chef. He earned a certificate in restaurant administration. He also received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology. After returning to South Bend, Charles was employed by the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Century Center and the Holiday Inn. While at Notre Dame, Charles served as Executive Chef. He was an avid sports fan, and his love of sports led him to become an assistant baseball coach at Washington High School. Whether sports, food or education, Charles displayed a passion for everything in which he became involved. His greatest accomplishment was accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Charles was studying to become a minister and was a member of the Agape Tabernacle of Philadelphia, PA.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Michelle E. Price of Delaware; daughter, Tonya Price; brothers, Jerry Edward (Cassandra) Price, Louis James (Lynn) Price; sister, Anita (George) Ferguson; aunt, Wilma Gary; uncle, John Ward; nieces, Yuganda Price, Andrea Darden, Keisha Phillips; nephews, Jerry Price Jr., James Price, Anthony Darden, all of South Bend; nephew, Gregory Graham of Fort Wayne; and a host of family and friends who celebrate his life and death. 

"The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?" Psalm 27: 1-2.

A memorial service will be held on November 19th at 11 a.m. at Grace A.M.E. Zion Church. Funeral services for Charles were held on October 24th in Philadelphia. He was buried with military honors at the Veterans Cemetery in Bear, Delaware.

Bruce Allen Best (1965)

This is so sad. I had no idea about all of his many accomplishments, I only knew him from Central High School Football and Wrestling. He was thought of as a very kind person on our sports teams and he was also very good at whatever he did.

Lance E Potter (1965)

I played basketball with Charlie a couple of times. I don't remember where... maybe behind St Paul's church. Didn't see him for a couple of years. Next time I saw him was downtown on Michigan St. He was being pushed in a wheelchair. As I recall, he no longer had legs from below his knees.

Bob Kwiecinski (1965)

I remember Charles from Wrestling.  He was an outstanding wrestler and a very kind, very friendly person.  I loved his laugh too.
