SOUTH BEND - Robert J. Moody Sr., 76, of South Bend, died Thursday morning in Memorial Hospital. Bob retired in 2004 after working as a realtor with Century 21 Realty Plus, South Bend, for 15 years. He also worked as a marine mechanic in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, marinas. He was owner, mechanic and operator of the DX gas station on Western Avenue and Liberty for several years. He was also the mechanic and manager of the Roseland Standard station.

He was born July 12, 1931, in South Bend, to James Harry and Anna (Stage) Moody, who preceded him in death along with a sister, Mary Slott, and two brothers, Murray and Eugene "Bud" Moody.

On August 12, 1950, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, South Bend, he married Marjorie White, who survives along with a son, Robert J. (Sheila) Moody Jr. of Osceola. He also leaves behind his special companion, his dog, Bitsy.

Bob was a graduate of South Bend Central High School, was a member of the St. Joseph County Board of Realtors, the Independent Garage Owners Association, AARP, and was a fan of ND football and NASCAR. In the late 1950s and early 60s, he raced stock cars at Playland Park and South Bend Motor Speedway and later built "modified" race cars that competed at South Bend Motor Speedway and at racetracks in Mottville and Hartford in Michigan and New Paris and Fort Wayne in Indiana. In recent years, he enjoyed attending several of the Michiana Vintage Racers events at South Bend Motor Speedway and the M-40 Speedway in Jones, Michigan.

Bob also loved the ocean and Lake Michigan, and enjoyed many years on his boat at New Buffalo, Michigan. Bob also enjoyed working outdoors with trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetable gardens.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and health care workers who cared for Bob at Memorial Hospital.

There will be no visitation or services. The HICKEY Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 17131 Cleveland Road, is assisting the family with arrangements Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
